Are You “Fed Up”?

Have you seen the Cheerio’s commercial where the father asks his son which flavor Cheerio’s are his favorite?  The little boy says, chocolate, fruit, etc, etc….and lastly he says his favorite are the ones he eats with his Dad.  Holy Smokes!  Talk about pushing sugar in our children’s faces and minds!!!!

Can someone please tell me why a can of Campbell’s Chicken and Wild Rice soup needs to include sugar? Or for that matter: mayo???

I recently got a blog post from a fiber farm in my inbox that talked about a new documentary in theatres now.  It got my attention so I started doing a little research about it.

Now, I’m not one that jumps on the latest bandwagon for weight loss or diet theory but this made so much sense to me that it has almost consumed me.  The documentary is called “Fed Up” and it’s produced by Katie Couric, Laurie David, and Stephanie Soechtig.  It’s about sugar addiction in America and the role our government and Big Food plays in it.  Dr. Mark Hyman who worked with Bill Clinton after his heart issues is in the documentary and he says that fat and poor exercise habits are not to blame for our obesity epidemic.  He says that sugar is the culprit.

The more I read, the more sense it all makes to me.  We’re reading labels and putting things back on the shelf.  I’m learning the different names sugar can go by.  I’m making some decisions about what is acceptable to me and what isn’t.  For example, if sugar or one of it’s other names is listed in the first 5 ingredients, that’s an automatic “no” for me.  If, it’s further down the ingredient label, it’s a maybe.  We looked at almost every brand of cereal on the shelves at Target.  The only ones that had no added sugar were “Grape Nuts” and “Shredded Wheat”.  My favorite cereals are “Lucky Charms”, “Crunchy Raisin Bran”, and plain “Cheerio’s”.  Can I start crying now?

I took the 10 day challenge on the Fed Up site and am on day 10.  Yes, I’ve fallen off the wagon a few times (those darned pralines knew me by name) , but for the most part, I’ve done well.  I know I feel better.  I have more energy and move around better.  And I’ve lost a few pounds but I had a head start on that (more about that in another post).

I had totally messed up my right wrist when I took up knitting again.  I have gout and evidentally the knitting precipited a gout crystal attack in the wrist that has lasted for almost a year.  Nsaids are a no-no for me because I’ve lost part of a kidney due to cancer.  I started drinking water with lemon in it after I started the challenge and whacked my sugar intake.  The pain in my wrist is practically gone.  At times it was almost unbearable so I am amazed.

My doc had put me on meds to bring the uric acid level down so this could all be coincidental but I don’t think so.  I still had the pain a full month after starting Colcrys and Uloric even though my uric acid level returned to a normal level in 2 weeks.  I think it’s a combination of practically no added sugar and the lemon water.  Whatever it is…it’s working and I’m happy.

Fed Up will be in New Orleans starting next weekend and so far the theatre site isn’t listing the times that tickets can be purchased for.  The next closest place to me is in Mobile.  I’m determined to see this so there might be a little road trip in my future.  I’d rather go to New Orleans but I’m afraid the showing is going to be at night and I don’t drive at night.  Anyone want to go with me?

I’m not trying to convince any of you to do anything you’re not interested in or are skeptical about, but you might want to just do a little research on your own.  I’ve done a lot of digging so I’ll provide some links and imbed a few video’s for you.  If you watch them all, it will take a while.  There are some good video’s you can watch to see if this holds any interest to you.  A lot of information is repeated but that helps me remember things.

There is an awesome article in Discover magazine about the changes in the American diet after the war on Fat started. If you can get a copy of the magazine read it. It will open your eyes. Also, it isn’t just sugar that is the culprit in our obesity epidemic, it is the whole class of carbohydrates and the fact that it is on the bottom of the food pyramid and dairy and other fats are at the top.

  4. I have been eating Shredded Wheat for many, many years. My kids call my bales of wheat cereal. When my kids were growing up (47 and 43 now), they were allowed two cereals from the stores…..Rice Krispies and Corn Flakes. I read labels faithfully and have been doing so for the past 10 years. If I can’t pronounce an ingredient, it stays in the store. We rarely drink soft drinks in our house, we are milk drinkers. Way too much sugar in them. I will read the article while I’m on holidays next week. It’s time for everyone to stop buying the junk the food suppliers are throwing out at us. Convenience foods are costly on our health.

  6. Hey mam,

Is it only playing in New Orleans for one day? I’d love to go, but I have Kennedy and I can’t switch to Thursday, cause I have food pantry that day. When is it showing in mobile? Was also so sorry to hear about Susan. I know you will miss her terribly, but have the wonderful memories in your heart.
