I know it’s just about too late to do anything before Christmas, but I’m going to try. I know next to nothing about weaving. I want to find a simple, loom, threads, notions for weaving for Chris.
He has been participating in a weaving class at Options and he gave me 2 pieces today that he had done. They are beautiful. Here’s one of the pieces. They’re using donated leftovers but I’m so proud of what he made.
I think he would love to have his own stuff and possible make some things I could sell for him in an Etsy shop…maybe scarves, table accessories???
If any of you know anything about weaving, please leave a comment and tell me your thoughts. He wouldn’t have room for a large, standing loom. It would have to be something portable.
I’ll be waiting for your recommendations! If you know of any weaving blogs, I’d love to have links to those too.

/ December 19, 2012When I did off loom weaving, we used heavy cardboard, large circler wooden one and had holes drilled in the wood. cardboard worked very well, just cut small slits on both ends, wrap warp, and then weave. Even old picture frames will work. hope this helps some.

/ December 19, 2012I’ve got a very large loom and work on it daily. Sometimes for just an hour but sometimes all day. It’s like my quilting, very relaxing and helps clear this old brain of mine. I was given the loom and supplies free. A quilting friend of mine passed away several years ago and her DH was wanting to clear the house as he was selling it. He gave me the loom and supplies as an after thought. I’d purchased my friends fabric stash and a few if her sewing machines. I’m honored, because she taught me to weave many years ago.

/ December 19, 2012I know the loom must be special to you. Although Chris doesn’t have room for a large loom, I have room in The Barn for one if he decides he really, really loves doing it. I probably will get as much enjoyment from it as he does.

/ December 19, 2012As soon as I saw Chris’s lovely work I thought of book covers, I have one that my mum made before I was born, and it is still hanging in there. (I was born in the 50’s)

/ December 20, 2012If all he is going to do is small items, then find him a table top loom, but if he will be doing all sizes I recommend a Baby Wolf floor model, smallest size. I have had both and worked with both, I lobed my Baby Wolf, but also enjoyed doing scarfs, table runners, etc on the table model. You might try to see if you can find a weaving guild somewhere close, they always know where you can find a good loom at a fair price, and he could join the guild and learn much from them. / December 21, 2012Sheryl I have done a little weaving and did demos at a state park as a volunteer a few yrs back…by no means am I a pro at it… If you have not rec any replys on this here are a few ideas… Ask Chris teachers of the weaving class what brand weaving looms did they use on the projects… there are several out there, but he may be more comfortable using the brand he was taught on.. there is a big difference in set up on some…some are loaded from the front and some they load from the back….ok I mean the threading of the set up…the way the foot petals work are also a bit different on some.. this is the reason I said it would be good idea to purchase one similar to the one he was taught on…. Great Place to get supplies and looms is a company in Ashville NC called Earth Guild …you can look them up on line …. Chris did a beautiful job on the weavings, I love his choose of colors…one can use about anything to weave with from..tee shirts/old clothes or bed sheet material (cheap source of fabircs) to yarns… the warp threads would be the biggest expence of course after the machine cost and it comes in an aray colors…Ebay is another good place to look for a used loom/ books/shuttles/well anything to do with weaving…I have purchsed weaving equipment and books that way….Weavers are like quilter they are very helpful so purhapes there is a Weaver Guild around your area that maybe of some help as well.
