Pictures on Webshots???

I realize that most people have heard about the changes/demise of Webshots.  Just in case you didn’t know about it, that’s what this post is about.

Webshots is being replaced by a service called “Smile”.  I don’t know who’s smiling about this whole thing except maybe the powers-that-be who think they’re going to get rich from the new “paid” service.  I wish them well but in the meantime I’ve had to download my photos from the site and find a new place to store things.

Any way…..if you have photo’s stored on Webshots, you need to download them and find a new host unless  you’re interested in using the Smile service.  Webshots is closing December 1st so you have a few weeks to do this but if you’re anything like me, you wait until the last minute to get things done.

Big Surprise!!!  I’ve actually already downloaded my photos!

If you want to keep your pictures on Smile, you have to do what is called “confirm” an account with them.  They will give you a 30 day free trial.  After that, you must pay a subscription fee.  If you decide to stay with Smile, keep in mind that no one will be able to view your photo’s UNLESS they are also Smile subscribers.

I tried to find out what the plans cost, but I can’t do that without creating an account and I don’t want one.

Here’s the link for the page where you can start your download process.  There should be an orange link to start the download process.  Follow the instructions and then you’ll wait for an e-mail telling you your files are ready.

This part is important!  The link in the e-mail is NOT an active link so don’t click on it.  You’ll just get frustrated.   Go back to the Webshots page where you started the process and click that orange link again.  That’s where you’ll find the files to download.

A little confusing, no?  At least you can retrieve and save your pictures.

What to replace Webshots with?  I have a Photo Bucket account that I may use but I don’t find it to be user friendly.  I’ve heard Google’s Picasa is a good free site and because it’s connected to Google, it may be more stable than some.  Shutterfly is free also.

So now it’s up to you to save your photo’s from extinction.  Until another time, I’ll leave you  with some pictures I took on our way home from a travel nurse assignment in Baltimore, MD in 2002.  We stayed a few days outside Townsend, TN (near Cades Cove).  These are some of the pictures  I HAD stored on Webshots.

Thanks for the info about the pictures. About your pictures, I first saw then before I read them and thought “That looks familiar!! Ha, I am leaving to go there today actually. My sister lives in Knoxville and we are going to rent a cabin outside of Gatlinburg and go exploring in Cades Cove tomorrow! I was married there 7 years ago yesterday and one of your pictures of the water looks like the same spot! Thanks!

    • I wish I could go back. It’s so peaceful there. When you’re exploring, there’s a little house with 2 strange boxes with round holes in them (in the outside kitchen I think). See what you think those are.

Oh, and don’t show your DH my pics! I’m not the photographer he is. Lol. I can’t hold the camera still so my focus is never perfect.

  2. At least that is one place I never had photos. Do you know if the desktop screen saver is going away too? I use that portion of the service on the computer at work. A long time ago, I consolidated everything into Picasa Web Albums and also to Flickr.

  3. I took mine off Webshots the other night. Anything with people in them and just left the rest. They are all scenery and I already have them on discs. I wasn’t using it that much so I won’t miss it, but I know there will be others that will. I can’t figure out why they are doing this, but I guess they figure they will make millions. Its always about the money!!!!

Thank you — I received no notice from webshots re this so would have been oblivious and lost all my photos. I haven’t put new ones out there recently but there are a whole lot of quilt photos I don’t have any where else along with some family ones so they have now been dowloaded to a disk. Thanks for the heads up!
