You Never Know

What you’ll wake up to each day.

The date Mardi Gras falls on changes from year to year but the holiday itself will never be quite the same for me.  I get up every morning at 5:30 to get Chris on the Options bus for work and then I go back to bed for a nap.  I’ve always been a late sleeper and I love my nap time.

I was taking my nap as usual on Mardi Gras morning when my phone rang.  I had an MRI done the week before to check some back problems and it was my neurologist’s office calling me with the results.  First, I was told me about things that are wrong in my back and then the nurse said I have a mass in my right kidney. And then she gave me that canned stuff they teach students in nursing school….”I know this is a lot for you to process”….to which I thought….”you don’t have a clue”.  Nor did I have an inkling how hollow those words sound until you’ve heard them applied to yourself.

Maybe I’m just too plain old fashioned but I think that’s the kind of news the doctor should tell a patient.  I have nothing against nurses.  I’m an RN myself even though I don’t work any longer.  I just can’t imagine myself taking the responsibility for giving a patient that kind of news.

So, several weeks later and after being referred to a urologist here who sent me for a CT scan and then referred me to a urologist in New Orleans, I’m waiting for my surgery date to arrive.

I’ve had my pre-op labs/tests done for the anesthesia department at Tulane.  I’ve completed my online “Passport” and the docs there have downloaded it.  In about 2 weeks, I’ll have a couple labs repeated and get my clearance for surgery.

Tulane has housing for patients and their families with a walk-way connecting to the hospital.  We’ve already got our reservation so we can drive into the city the day before and spend the night there.

I’ve had my suitcase packed for almost as long as I’ve known about the mass….even before I saw the first urologist.  It’s got new housecoats, gowns (no designer hospital attire for me if I can help it), and Purr-Purrs (one of my sisters couldn’t say slippers when she was young so she called them Purr-Purrs) in it.  I’ve still got to put something comfy to wear home in the suitcase.  I’ve got my Bible ready to put in the suitcase and I bought a beautiful journal to write in.

I’ve decided to surround myself with only positive thoughts, scripture, our Lord, my family and good friends.  No horror stories about surgery or cancer  please.  🙂

A few details:

Robotic Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy.  That’s the planned procedure.  If you’ve heard of the DaVinci robot, that’s what my doctor will be using for my surgery. Dr. Benjamin Lee is my urologist.  You can Google him if you just like to look up stuff.  🙂  He thinks I’ve had this for a long time and that it’s slow-growing.  He also thinks it has not spread beyond the kidney.

Chemo and/or radiation aren’t generally used to treat kidney cancers.

May 3rd at Tulane Hospital in New Orleans.  That’s where I’ll be.

For anyone who might be concerned about Garden Party.  I have most of the blocks uploaded and ready to be announced as scheduled so hopefully we won’t miss a single beat.  🙂

I believe God guided me to the right doctor to do this surgery.  Please keep me, my family, and my medical team in your positive thoughts and prayers and please feel free to add my name to prayer lists at your church.

Until later….

    Hi Sheryl, sending you prayers and very positive thoughts from Australia.:)
    My DH was diagnosed with lung cancer early last year, he hadn’t even felt sick, just a bit of a cough, but he didn’t feel right and he had worked with asbestsos most of his working life. Won’t go into all of the details but there were so many tests, before he was found to be suitable for surgery. He had half of his left lung removed and they are 99% sure that he is cured!!!! He is doing really well, gets a bit puffed if he exerts himself too much, but apart from that everything is just great and I am sure that you will have the same outcome! I don’t think God wants to meet you for a long time yet!! Love and hugs to you from Sandy,
    p.s. I hope someone can post on here how you are doing while you are in hospital! 🙂

    You are in my prayers.
    From Psalm 28:
    6 ¶ Blessed be the LORD!
    for he has heard the voice of my pleas for mercy.
    7 The LORD is my strength and my shield;
    in him my heart trusts, and I am helped;
    my heart exults,
    and with my song I give thanks to him.
    8 The LORD is the strength of his people;
    he is the saving refuge of his anointed.
    9 Oh, save your people and bless your heritage!
    Be their shepherd and carry them forever.

    Sheryl, you have been such an inspiration to me through your blogs. When you aren’t mobile like I am people tend to forget about you after many months of not being active, or seen, in church or the community so your cheerful outlook and your fun blogs keep me going. Now it is my turn to let you know that you will have my total support through daily prayers and continuous thoughts about you while you face what has to be a very scary time. I know God will be with you because He promises He doesn’t bring us to a place where He isn’t beside us to see us through it. Ricky and I will be keeping up with you and we just want you to know you are very special and you are loved. Niki

    Well girl, sounds like you’ve got it covered (your positive thoughts, prayers, Lord, family & friends). Seems like when something like this happens, most people have this ‘oh, I know how you feel’, or some such. I can’t imagine how you feel, but I can feel for you. I would like to share something that I was told by my GYN Oncologist, “We never say cancer till we SEE it.” (key word is SEE). This was told me when they found a tumor on my ovary the size of a football (my daughter named it Steve).
    You, and your family, will be in our thoughts and prayers.

    I’ll keep you in my prayers that God will guide the surgeon’s hands and mind, that you will stay well and rested through your surgery date, that there are no delays, that you and your family can be comforted by your choices of medical facilities and doctors and doing the best you can. I wish I could be there to just hold your hand. Know that you are not alone as you are part of a big community of admirers and friends.

    To be mentioning Garden Party shows you are full of positive thoughts and I’ve always thought that positive people come through not so good times in a better mental and physical state than those that dwell on ‘maybe’s’ and ‘what ifs’. Adding my positive thoughts to yours and wishing you a successful surgery and a quick and easy recovery from it afterwards. The right doctor is always a blessing too.

    I am not sure if you remember me, but I had a brain surgery and also a right paratid glad removal in 2005 due to tumors and have come a long way since then. I want you to know that I think you have a wonderful fighting spirit, and the love of family and friends to help you heal. And God says “when two or more are gathered in my name I will listen.” I, and many others will be praying for you Sheryl. Sending lots of Hugs your way.
